I Am On The Radio

For the last week, I have been obliquely referring to something afoot. That something is a taping I did for ABC Radio National on Monday afternoon for its "All In The Mind" program. Radio National is Australia's NPR/BBC. I talked with the host, Natasha Mitchell, for about 45 minutes on Zyprexa, the Zyprexa documents, Eli Lilly, the lack of effective mental health advocacy in America and my rather conflicted status as a journalist/blogger/advocate. I'll get edited down to six or seven minutes. The program runs 30 minutes and will also include an appearance by a woman with schizophrenia and a spokesperson for Eli Lilly (Australia).

I can't thank Mitchell enough for paying attention to this important issue. I continue to be confused as to why the major media in this country--aside from Slate.com--have walked away from this story just cuz' the Times broke it first. Wimps.

The show airs at 5 p.m. PST Thursday evening. Not sure about a live Internet feed, but a podcast version will be available for downloading from their website. I'll provide links tomorrow for those of you interested in listening to my blither-blather. BTW, the show apparently has a fair number of listeners in the US via podcast.

I reckon Eli Lilly's lawyers will be listening. After all, they have been reading this site a few times a day for the last month or so. Which is cool. I want transparency around matters Zyprexa, so I have no trouble being fly-specked in return.

Philip--

It will be interesting to hear how Lilly's spokesperson replies. When diabetics needing animal insulins found an advocate at a Florida television station to do an in-depth piece, the corporate response was both predictable and insulting.

In essense, the Lilly spokesperson said ALL diabetics could use genetically-engineered insulin, and the ANECDOTAL reports (of hypoglycemia unawareness, dead-in-bed syndrome) covered by the investigator could be easily answered: Diabetics--when they get a cold, they blame the insulin, when they get an infection they blame the insulin, and hypoglycemia? . . . these anecdotal reports were probably by diabetics who forgot that they forgot to eat!

You can watch the video featuring Lilly's spokesperson (John Holcombe, MD) here:

Congrats Philip, I can't wait to download it. For those reading at home, this is not Philip's first radio broadcast and he is a great speaker. I would recommend downloading ITunes and listening to the commentary. I am sure it will be well worth it.

That's great to hear Philip--great job!

As far as the Lilly rep; I'm expecting a canned answer, that won't address any real issues; as in politics; or a person not wanting to get fired from their job for speaking out against Lilly.

Cool. When you're on the radio, you know you've "made it."

Your blog makes me lazy. Why dig up on pharma info when I've got you to do it for me? ;)

Looking forward to it. There's very little debate about the actual content of psychiatric treatments in Australia, only much lamenting of the general lack of funding of the mental health system.
