November 24, 2006So I Was Right On Two CountsYesterday's New York Times has an article by Gardiner Harris, the third in the series on troubled children, establishing what I have been saying on this blog for the last year--that there is poor evidence for the use of atypicals and polypharmacy in children. From where I sit, it's a major article given who he's quoting in the piece, including Tom Insel who is the head of NIMH. Hell, I don't think the evidence is so great in adults. In addition, a new British study is out which backs another of my main points on this blog--namely, that atypicals perform poorly in adults (sometimes worse than older antipsychotics) and that their side effects are such that they provide no quality of life benefit to patients, long the aytpicals' alleged trump card. Nice to have my ramblings confirmed again. I'll have much more to say about these studies on Monday. For now, I am going to enjoy the weekend. Posted by Philip Dawdy at November 24, 2006 09:50 AM

Hi Phil! Good one. Hi Stephany and all ye peeps! I'm back from the hospital and am up and at 'em again! I'm doing much better. Has anyone of you ever taken Haldol? Right when I got to the hosptial they put me on Haldol, and BOY did it make me feel better! It calmed me down and got rid of all the agitation I was feeling. It also made it so that I was 1000000% less likely to do something bad to people. I've never taken a drug that was so fast acting and made me feel so much better. Haldol is my new best friend. The only problem is I can't take it long term becuase it'll cause tardadive dyskenethia and I definatly cannot have that. But now I know that whenever I'm thinking of doing bad things to people, I'll just take some Haldol, and everything will be all better again! Has anyone of you taken Haldol? How do you like it? It's really done wonders for me. And Stephany, thank you so much for your beautiful card! That was awesome! Thanks so much for your support. The only problem I have right now is that my parents are not letting me go back to the dorms and I have to live at home. Barf. I also had to drop all my classes. But anyway, things are good! And I'll probably go right back to posting my silly little comments on this site. Ta! Gwen Posted by: Gwen at November 24, 2006 02:10 PMGwen, I am so glad you are back! That is a good series in the Times though I've had my trouble reading it, last week I stopped where the happy and complacent mom gushes about psychopharm's effect on her child and her plan to write a book about her enlightening journey. I can't handle this, what is happening to this generation, to therapeutics, to phenomenology, simple common sense. I swear to god these reports make me a little psychotic myself. I know it's complex and heartbreaking to see a fifteen year old slash up her arms. I know it's easier to treat the symptoms and ignore the meaning of it. I have no fucking sympathy for this mentality, none. If we could just please consider the behavior has meaning, is not necessarily a constitutional defect. This is what psychiatry has taught us. Where the hell are the psychiatrists? The nature/nurture investigation is dead. Environment is irrelevant. In a classroom of 25 the one acting out is the defacto problem. There's nothing wrong with the other 24 because they're not acting out. This is the conventional wisdom. What happened to that whole body of scholarship? Family systems theory, where kids take on scapegoating roles in dysfunctional systems? Where did this go? Are families no longer dysfunctional? Did we cure neglect and maltreatment? We're literalizing the metaphorical scapegoate, as a culture we are collaborating with depravity. Exploited within the family and within the institutions meant to address the family. No place to go. We deserve every minute of the coming shitstorm once these kids grow up and come to terms with what's been done to control them.
