August 15, 2006More On Special K, And Something StupidThat study showing rapid-onset anti-depressant effects from ketamine has been getting a lot of play, including from conservative blogger Michael Fumento. I hope NIMH plans on funding further studies of the anesthetic, at least on whatever its underlying mechanism is in the brain since it seems to skip the many steps it takes for a regular anti-depressant to have an effect. Or maybe ketamine could be studied where docs might ordinarily slap a massively depressed patient with an antipsychotic—at the right dose, I bet ketamine is no more risky than Zyprexa. So study the hell out of Special K. While running through that argument, however, Fumento says something bizarre: "The good news is that most depressives can be treated with drugs, talk therapy, electroconvulsive treatment, or a combination thereof. " Drugs? Thirty percent success rate. ECT? You go try it, Mike. Posted by Philip Dawdy at August 15, 2006 12:01 AM

Please note: ". . . or some combination thereof." Assuming the accuracy of your 30% figure, that would require only 21% from EC and talk therapy to reach "most." And I have tried it. Clinical depression runs in my family including me. I have successfully been treated pharmaceutically for 10 years. Posted by: Michael Fumento at August 15, 2006 11:19 AMI say stuff like that to my doctor: "I wish YOU had schizophrenia so they could lock you up in the secluion room all night, and restrain you and give you injections, and then YOU could see what if feels like!!!" I abuse him so much. But he loves me, and I love him, and we have such a great relationship. I could say whatever I want, and it's all good. Posted by: Gwen at August 15, 2006 12:17 PMPsychiatrists get paychecks. I admire the ones who spend genuine time with their patients. Posted by: Stephany at August 15, 2006 05:07 PMMy psychiatrist definatley spends genuine time with me. In fact, he spends too much genuine time. I see him for an hour once a week, and we have so much fun! I always beat him in chess. Once I beat him in only four moves (I learn from my brother who is the chess master in our family). He was stunned. But he's more stunned when we play SET. Ever play? It's this card game -- on each card there is a different symbol, in a different color, in a differnt number, and you have to find patterns within the cards. It's a very visual-spacial game. He could do it, but I could do it 10 times faster! It's fun! And when I saw him the other day, we went outside and basked in the sun while we talked. It's very relaxing. But sometimes it's not so relaxing because sometimes I want to throw rocks at him or try to do something bad to him, and then I start screaming and hide behibnd the couch. It's distressing when that happnes. But what's even more distressing is when he asks me about the parties. That's not good. I'm not allowed to talk about it. And then sometimes I'll start whispering so they won't hear me, and whatever. You know, this whole thing is whatever. Anyway, he just showed me pictures of his two little boys, and they're so beautiful! He's married to a Korean, so they are all Asian looking. So cute! And I'm always bringing him books and magazines for his kids. I love them. The older one just got into Open Window School, a gifted school in Bellevue, and I'm so excited! I love those kids. I love my doctor. I'm very, very lucky to have him. This whole having schizophrenia thing, really does have its perks. Posted by: Gwen at August 15, 2006 08:48 PMI agree must be studied more.I have been on every psyche drug there is and they are all ineffective and worthless. Get this,if i take 60 mg of oral prednisone (50 cents a day cost)i am happy and stable.I discovered this when i had bouts of ulcerative colitis and took the steroid to supress inflammation. The drawback is steroids have a zillion adverse side effects.Cheers,Daniel Haszard Posted by: Daniel Haszard at August 16, 2006 08:34 AMI still take the stand Mike, from my REAL LIFE experience that "special-k" is similar to PCP. Of course like many drugs, Ativan, Xanax, etc this will give patients immediate results. The after effects will be more devistating. I have seen what this drug does to people. Have you ever seen someone on PCP? Similar results. Of course it is going to make a depressed person feel better. The problem is, they are going to need more at a higher dose and it is highly addictive. Most likely causing them to hit the streets in search of higher doses. This is not a good solution. Yes, our current solution with psych meds sucks but be assured out pharma companies are searching for better solutions because they make billions from them.
