A Modest Proposal

Some may remember that I recently suggested to the Treatment Advocacy Center that they not only catalog what they deem "preventable tragedies"--violence involving the mentally-ill--but that they also catalog injuries and deaths related to psych meds. Preventable tragedies go in both directions in the mental health world, right?

Of course, the fine folks at TAC didn't respond. After all, how would it help their agenda if they were honest that their idea of "treatment" sometimes carried problems of its own? Silly me for suggesting it.

So now I am suggesting it again, only this time to readers of this blog. Does anyone else think it might be useful to catalog the people who have died or been injured or debilitated at the hands of psych meds? Does anyone else think we could somehow pull together names, ages, places, injuries, meds involved and put it into a useful database?

Let me know.

Absolutely. There is a need for objective or at least complete statistics, ones that are accessible by all sides of the argument. It's awfully difficult be "informed" when the information to round-out perspectives isn't even available.

Sounds like a great idea to me. Rub their noses in it a bit, if you will.

Would you only include atypicals / anti-depressants, etc., or would you also include drugs like Accutane, which is what that kid was on when he flew the small plane into that Florida building some years back?

YES.

it's such a sensible idea that it's a shame such information is not already readily accessible. it's sneaky and deceitful to present such a one-sided view of treatment, especially to patients weighing the options of treatment by medication.

i suppose i feel strongly about this, because those close to me have actually come to harm through cetain medications.
i myself felt tricked when i began treatment with second generation anti-psychotics. it was presented to me, not only as a relatively sure-fire "cure", but also as the only hope, which i believe to be entirely untrue.

the need for these statistics is clear. without them, it's simply unfair.

Include all medications possible. Just like Accutane, any med can create a problem due to chemistry within indivuals. Why not do a broad sweep, go for it.
Set up a database on the sidebar where people can add their own info. Ask several questions that cover as many bases and crossovers as possible.
Then have it show a graph.
You can post it as a simple reader's "poll".
Thanks

Some thoughts-
1- When I went on lithium 13 years ago, it worked but gave me terrible shakes, headaches, acne, and forty pounds of weight gain---all which normalized slowly over a few years. Now, I RARELY have side effects. When i was put on lithium, there weren't really other options, and in a way, that was good, because I stuck through the side effects and now have it "easy".
2- I took seroquel once for anxiety. It didn't actually take away anxiety per se, it just made me so tired that I couldn't conjure thoughts. I'd only use it in the future on extreme occaisions if my anxiety got so bad that it was threatening my mental health.
3- I like this power to the people reporting of what meds are like. HOWEVER, it makes me a little worried that the big picture is being lost, that there is a whole lot more to mental health than taking meds, and lots of constructive work and healing for sick people to do while meds aren't working. Philip maybe people can be writing in about what DOES work for improving their mental health.
