Comment Of The Day

A reader offers the following in response to the earlier sad story of an Irish schizophrenic dying young and under mysterious circumstances:

"Misadventure . . .right!!!! There is seriously more to this story. I would like to know his family history regarding heart disease. As my medications continue to increase in not only in dosage but variety, I am constantly aware of how the handfull of pills I ingest daily (that have actually saved my life) may end up killing me in the end."

Any others taking psych meds have these kinds of concerns? I wonder all the time about what effects meds I have taken long-term may have done to my body, especially in the cases of Lithium (not so nice to kidneys over time), Risperdal (made my heart race and have odd rhythms) and Seroquel (nothing specific yet, but I have my concerns).

Where do I start. Prozac and me: bad combo with Xanax, I saw double vision and had "official" suicidal ideations. Daughters: youngest who has been on meds 'not for under age 18' since age 11: Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome confirmed by 3 docs per 6 yrs of Depakote (means she has now increased chances per specialist "of having cervical cancer". Too many concerns and meds to list, but I will end with my oldest and seeing double vision on Geodon, and having to worry about dropping dead as a side effect. Those will do for starters. Sometimes I think , it is damned if you do and damned if you dont.

My concern, and major lifesaver, it Trileptal. It is one of the anti-convulsants that is relatively new. However, to tolerate it, I had to endure almost 2 weeks of double vision, slurring speech, nausea and drowsiness.

Since then, I have added Buspar and Cymbalta.

Let's top all of this off with Ambien at night, because the above cocktail won't allow me to sleep on my own.

You tell me . . .does all this stuff sound healthy? However, without it, I know I would not be alive today.

What a drag.
