Overuse of Psych Meds: What the Jesus Crowd Thinks
A couple of days ago, I noted a new study outlining the prevalance of psych med prescriptions in teen males. One of its surprising findings was that 10 percent of male teens wind up with an Rx for a psych med during doctors' visits. Here's what uber-Xtian group Focus on the Family thinks. Yep, God will chase that mental illness away. It's in the Bible, right?

oh this is good. did my mom email you this story?!?!' i live in the bible belt and if i had to count how many times i've heard this or read this- well, i'd be up for days counting. just pray and you will be fine. until recent i've kept my mouth shut- but now my response is simply- ok pray and stop taking that insulin, would ya?
“It behooves the parent to look beyond the immediate symptoms and ask themselves, ‘Why is my child depressed? Why is my child anxious? What’s going on in our family situation? What’s going on in the child’s school environment with his peers?”
the problem with this thinking is, most families, at least in the bible belt, wouldn't dare talk about these issues. suzy is depressed...shhhh. jenny has cancer...let's pray. at least, that has been my experience. i can't speak for the entire crowd, but a big percentage of them, yes. we need more than meds, yes, but we need to kill this damn stigma. it's pathetic.
