November 04, 2005Sometimes, Atypicals RockAs much as I bitch about atypical antipsychotics (especially their aggressive use in bipolars), these meds have clearly been a godsend for schizophrenics. Thousands of schizophrenics do not have to spend their lives in state hospitals or on the streets or locked away in group homes because atypicals treat hallucinations and such without turning patients into total zombies the way older antipsychotics do. Here's more evidence. I am far more dubious about using APs in bipolars over the long-term. But that's for another day. Posted by Philip Dawdy at November 4, 2005 07:56 AM

Yo- my daughter hasn't had one hallucination since 3 days after starting Abilify. Now that Rocks! Posted by: Celina at November 4, 2005 10:09 PMAs a long time Seroquel user, I am finding your information to be similar to the experiences I am currently having. After years of increasing my dose, I am maxed out and now the 800mg I take to sleep, is not working. I am so sick and tired of this game. I also think this time of the year sucks for all of us. Anyone else of that opinion? I would like to know how many of us suffering from any form of mental illness have a tough time in October/November? Posted by: Mania Bound at November 5, 2005 10:22 AMThat's great Celina. Keep in mind that it's the long term that truly counts--as essential as it is to knock down symptoms in the short term--and I hope to god Abilify works for her in the long term. Laos, keep an eye on agitation and such because Abilify is becoming well-known amongst docs and patients for winding people up. And yeah, what the hell is it about October and November anyway? Anyone have any thoughts? Posted by: Dawdy at November 5, 2005 12:34 PMThis post got past me, but yeah I have thoughts about October/November..bipolar cycles in the Fall and Spring with such predicatable timing, it can be planned for, (IE medication adjusting)and as far as that goes, it has been in my daughter's IEP w school since 6th grade. All the teachers always used to know that Fall/Spring were hard for her. Behaviors due to illness were then not frowned upon by school staff, and often a doc's note to the school helped that along. |
