November 16, 2005Anti-Depressants Misused in Children: Duh!This shouldn't come as a shock, but here's a study that shows the huge shift away from using psychotherapy to treat depression in children to just slapping them with meds. Nothing wrong with using meds where they are indicated and with proper monitoring--which almost never happens--but as almost always happens when doctors get revved up about a new paradigm, they go too far overboard in using the new technology. My guess is we're only a few years out from studies like these being done on the use of atypical antipsychotics in children--and adults!--and coming to a similar conclusion that the overuse in bipolar disorder was quite dramatic. Why doctors never learn from the past is beyond me. Could we have some judiciousness, please? Posted by Philip Dawdy at November 16, 2005 10:13 PM

Speaking of depression, meds and kids, I don't think psyhciatric medication for adolescents with eating disorders does ANYTHING!!! I've suffered from eating disorder stuff ever since I was 12. Twice, my weight got so low that I had to be hospitilized. I was put on Zoloft. I was to be on antidepressents for the next four years. It did NOTHING!!! It does NOTHING!!! It'll do NOTHING!!! It's just complete garbage. Treating anorexia with meds does zip. And I'm not only speaking for myself: When I was in those psych units, I met many other girls who were on medication, and somehow I got the feeling that meds weren't too hot for them either. The ONLY way to treat eating disorders is with behavoiral and cognitive therapy. In fact, eating disorders, in my opinion, are harder to treat than schizphrenia or bipolar. For schizophrenics and bipolars, all you do is give them a handful of pill, and voila, things, most of the time, will be somewhat better. For anas however, the healing has to come from within -- the only thing that will be effacicous with them, is if they themselves put in a huge, gigantic, collosal amount of physical, emotional and mental effort. Does anyone disagree with me? Is there anyone out there whom meds have worked for in regard to eating disorders? If there is, let me know. Posted by: Gwen Davis at November 21, 2005 07:44 PM |
